The ability to get their prescriptions filled at their local Walgreens has just gotten little tricky for some patients who use Express Scripts as their PBM (Prescription Benefits Manager). Because negotiations between Walgreens and Express Scripts have not gone anywhere as of January 2012 those customers who use Express Scripts will no longer be able to get their prescriptions filled at Walgreens. Even our country’s military who use Tricare will now be forced to find another pharmacy. This is unfortunate for many reasons one of them being the disruption of the relationship of the pharmacist and patient. Many patients rely on their local pharmacists as a source of information and now those who rely on their local Walgreens pharmacist will have to find other solutions. Not to mention the hassle of finding another pharmacy that is open 24 hours and offers many of the services that Walgreens offers.
Walgreens understands the patients are going to be upset and are trying to help by offering a special discount on their Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens now through the end of the month. If you are effected by this change you can follow Walgreens on Twitter or Walgreens on Facebook to stay up to date. You can also contact your local TV or radio station and let them know you are unhappy. In the end the customer is ultimately impacted with no savings that are projected by Express Scripts not contracting with Walgreens. The pharmacies are not making a lot of money on the prescription refills as evident by many locally owned pharmacies going out of business. Everyone’s reimbursement for health care is decreasing so Walgreens has prided itself on offering more of a one stop shop in order to help offer their customers savings and convenience.
