We recently had our basement finished and were looking for ideas for our flooring that would be creative and functional. I loved the idea of having hard wood floors, but in the basement our only option was the engineered flooring that looks pretty close. We found some area rugs that we could lay over the top in our entertainment area that would bring out the rustic wood color in our baseboards while still showing off the flooring and it turned out quite nice. The idea was to have a simulated hard wood look without making the basement to cold and the area rugs were just the right touch.

We were in the market for a new computer desk and as we did our research it struck that people will spend time researching computer desks that will look good with their PC but do not consider to spend any length of time to actually protect what is in their PC. If you like me and most Americans we store ton of stuff on our computers. My entire family photo album is on my PC and most songs that we have purchased through online services. I was thinking what a disaster it would be if our hard drive failed or some other unexpected tragedy were to occur. Some of us will back up locally a CD or DVD. This is good but what if your backup gets scratched or worse yet you miss place your CD.

We just purchase some new furnishings for our home and the whole process was quite tiring. We went from store to store to find the right dining room set, computer desk, and kitchen table and after a while everything started to run together. The furniture stores that we visited all seemed to have the same stuff and it was difficult to find exactly what we were looking for and the sales people only seemed interested in selling us on the special of the day. That is why we started looking online to help find more selections and become more educated on the different types of furniture and the right questions to ask so that we did not settle for lesser quality.

There are many uses for rugs throughout your home one of which is creating a transition space between open spaces and doorways. With more homes where we live being built with the “Great Room ” concept it opens up the possibility to decorate. One of the main things is to keep the flow from the kitchen to the family room and not to box off the room with furniture that would defeat the whole purpose of the “great room”. Our home has this transition space between the kitchen and the family area that is hardwood leading to the carpet. We found that using two contemporary rugs that had the various colors of the room and darker colors to bring out the hardwood flooring was a great piece to have in between the two rooms.
This one small decorating touch has almost added a social space so that when we have friends and family over they hang out in this area so that you are right near the food and snacks but still close to the TV and other people that may be relaxing on the leather couches. Our kids are getting to the age where the beds and dressers that they have had for 5 plus years is starting to look a little dated. I noticed this just this past week when they had friends over and they were all huddled around one of the bunk beds trying to get their turn on the Xbox. So my wife went on a search to find what is new and exciting in kids furniture and actually found ourselves evaluating our own set that we have had for over 15 years.

Todays dining tables are now used in a more informal fashion to host family get togethers, breakfast time, and just hanging around with the family. With the contemporary look that has become more popular the dining table has become a more functional piece in the home and not reserved for the formal dining events. We use ours for everyday meals and the occasional homework station to help our kids get their school work done. We have found this to be a better solution than allowing everyone to sit around the TV and eat and have tried to make more family time during the evening when everyone gets home.

The old saying is true in that if you hang onto something long enough it comes back into style. I guess to me it was more retro since there was a use of chrome in the body of the dining table and chairs. We have been so used to seeing the oak and maple tables and chairs that the chrome look reminded me of my parents home with that diner feel. The chairs that my parent had were the candy apple red with white stripes and the table had a vinyl green top with chrome trim. What a great classic look. Now a days those table are selling for thousands as people are looking to recreate a time that was simple and less complicated. There are more home theaters today than ever before thanks in part to the availability of HDTV and the superior video capabilities that rival the movie theaters. We have installed a new TV in our basement and with a Blu-Ray DVD player the video is amazing and is so much better than our old DVD and 32 inch TV that we were accustomed too. There are many ideas out there as to what constitutes modern furniture. There are hundreds of online stores and brick and mortar stores that carry a large selections furniture so most every style is out there. What ever your thoughts about modern or contemporary furniture we would recommend a look that is functional.
By this we mean have the furniture and fixtures so that it flows and does not create a barrier to your interaction in the room. Too many times you walk into a room these days and you are greeted by a mammoth big screen TV with a larger leather couch. This look has become more popular and yet it closes off half the room and limits your ability to engage everyone in the room. The only thing that you can do it that room now is to stare at the large TV screen. Shouldn’t it be time to have a room that is meant for conversation and gathering rather than just entertaining? w

Any parent with kids can attest to the fact that their kids rooms are a tough place to keep clean. You will find numerous surprises under the bed and in the closet. We once came across a month old peanut butter and jelly sandwich in our sons room. When asked he swore that it was not him and that one his friends had brought it up to his room and left it there. Since we have kids coming in and out of the house we just had to take his word for it and set some ground rules about friends and food in the room. Our daughters are a different story because we recently purchased new kids furniture based the fact that they keep their rooms clean. This was a great motivator and now they clean their rooms daily even when they have their friends over.
Today their are so many options for kids bedrooms which is much better than what we had to choose from when I was a kid.
