There are many uses for rugs throughout your home one of which is creating a transition space between open spaces and doorways. With more homes where we live being built with the “Great Room ” concept it opens up the possibility to decorate. I have even see a furniture free space where you leave the room open for more informal gatherings. One of the main things is to keep the flow from the kitchen to the family room and not to box off the room with furniture that would defeat the whole purpose of the “great room”. Our home has this transition space between the kitchen and the family area that is hardwood leading to the carpet. We found that using two contemporary rugs that had the various colors of the room and darker colors to bring out the hardwood flooring was a great piece to have in between the two rooms.

We recently had our basement finished and were looking for ideas for our flooring that would be creative and functional. I loved the idea of having hard wood floors, but in the basement our only option was the engineered flooring that looks pretty close. We found some pergo flooring that offered a unique look of stone in one of our guest bedrooms. There was also some simulated wood patterns that gave more depth and warmth to a room. The idea was to have a simulated hard wood look without making the basement to cold and the area rugs were just the right touch.

I was watching the DIY (Do it yourself ) channel and there was a show on where they follow people around looking for their first home. It was interesting to see the types of budgets that they were working with and what type of house in various parts of the country you can get for your money. There was a couple with a budget of $500K looking for a home in the Washington, DC area and they were able to find a 3 bedroom home with about 1800 sq feet that still needed some improvements. They installed nickel plated shower faucets that were part of a walk-in shower. The overall look in the bathroom and the kitchen made the whole home look modern and new.

We found some area rugs that we could lay over the top in our entertainment area that would bring out the rustic wood color in our baseboards while still showing off the flooring and it turned out quite nice.
