Think LED for Christmas lights

August 10, 2010 - 11:07 pm - Posted by admin

LED lights will last on the average of 50K hours nearly twice as long as traditional lights and use about 1/10th of the energy. The main thing I like about these new lights is that they last twice as long, are more durable because they do not rely on the filament which can be a major cause of why many lights burn out quicker. Plus led christmas lights appear to be less reliant on an entire circuit like traditional holiday lights so if one does go out it does not take out the whole string. So this year after you have had the turkey dinner and you are thinking about dragging out the boxes of Christmas lights that you have kept around for years, why not save yourself some time and money and upgrade to the latest LED lights that will be sure to get the attention of your neighbors and make for a spectacular Christmas display.

Going green in 2010

July 9, 2010 - 3:41 pm - Posted by admin

It does appear the recession is over now. Many are seeing signs of growth in so many areas and the numbers do suggest that our recession ended last month in April. The government is still trying to encourage people to think green by offering incentives to use energy efficient light bulbs and household appliances. I saw one housing support article at Homes Tips Plus about using salt to go green and save energy. This was also seen with the “cash for clunkers” where the government was trying to get some of the gas hogs off the road and help the auto industry. I know a lot of people are still feeling it in May and nothing drastic is going to happen anytime soon. The housing market is looking to rebound and this will be the sector of the market that leads us to stability in the financial sector. People will still have a tough time in the job market and this is where the White House can play a key role.

We need the politicians on Capitol Hill to do whatever it takes to create more jobs. We have too many jobs going over seas right now and this isn’t good for our economy at home. Creating more jobs will boost sales in the retail sectors of the Market and eventually lead to more spending across the board. New home buyers are getting big tax breaks right now and that’s good to see. I think the White House is assisting in our recovery from the recession, but they do need to follow this up with more jobs.

Replace your old fixtures

July 1, 2010 - 1:09 pm - Posted by admin

Shows like Extreme Home makeover, and Flip It have been a huge success as the home improvement industry continues to grow. With the housing market softening and mortgage rates slowly creeping up people are looking to improve their current home rather than purchase new. By simply replacing or upgrading a few fixtures like door knobs and light fixtures you can improve the look and feel of your home. The one major item that you hear a homeowner can do to increase their value of their existing home is paint. Some people love to paint while the majority will look to outsource this job to a trusted contractor.

Finding hired help for your next move

May 8, 2010 - 8:22 pm - Posted by admin

Many times when you are moving locally you call up your buddies and ask them to spend a few hours to help you pack up your things and then offer them pizza and beer for their troubles. If you are making a move across the country that can be a bit more challenging so that is why hireahelper.com which was started in 2007 comes into play. You can find cheap local movers to help with your next move. They currently have over 4,000 registered helpers that can help you in your move or other household chores even landscaping. This service can help put you in touch with local help without the added expense of a larger organization. It is like finding those qualified laborers without all the hassle of having to go down to your local Home Depot and search through those guys standing around. Having the ability to hire and locate workers for your moving projects will allow you to save money and time.

We have moved homes three times in the last 7 years and I know the trials of packing up and moving from state to state. I keep having these dreams that I have moved into another house and it seems sad to leave my home where I currently live. So I’m not looking to move no time soon, but I’m sure if I won the lottery that would cheer me up enough to move. I have help friends and relatives to move into their new homes and it’s no fun carrying all the furniture to your new house. I guess the feeling is different if it’s you that is actually moving and maybe it’s just not fun because I have been on the helper end of things. If you have recently moved into a new home in the last year or two, feel free to share your story on what the first thing it was that you did. This knowledge might be good if I ever move and maybe I can learn the things not to do, when you first move in.

Employment numbers are picking up

April 30, 2010 - 4:22 pm - Posted by admin

A good sign that the economy is starting to pick up is that employment numbers are starting to trend up. With many of the Fortune 500 companies reporting better than expected earning and even the Ford reported a $2 billion profit helps to show that consumers are spending money and this in turn is helping to drive demand for more jobs. While we are still not out of the woods from a total economic perspective it is nice to hear consumer confidence is starting to pick back up and hopefully small businesses are seeing this success in their bottom line.

finding your new home

March 30, 2010 - 8:20 pm - Posted by admin

For many Americans getting into their first home is a huge accomplishment. The latest modular homes have come along way in style and affordability. These homes have come a long way in the design and quality that they offer. You can have many of the amenities in these homes as you would with a traditional home like granite counter tops, chandeliers, and energy efficient windows. We have had several friends over the last few years purchase manufactured homes and have really enjoyed the size and quality that has been built into their homes. It allowed them to have some additional space and bedrooms that was not possible because of their budget on older homes that were for sale. So if you are looking to upgrade your current living conditions you may want to check out the new look in homes and you may be surprised to see that your house payment is close to what you are paying in rent.

Furnishing your home

February 4, 2010 - 4:22 am - Posted by admin

Does anyone remember the bean bag? It use to be a common item seen in home furniture sections that came in multiple colors. I have noticed that they may be making a come back and have been on the lookout for one to put in our family room. Even the new contemporary coffee tables are coming with hidden drawers in order to store your games. This is where the kids play their Wii and watch DVDs with their friends. A bean bag would make the room more fun and provides a comfortable piece of furniture that the kids can play on. So keep your eyes open as retro is coming back, but hopefully we will avoid the orange shag carpet. This way you are not having to buy old outdated furniture or last years styles because of price. They are a membership club that offer you access to wholesale prices on furnishings for your entire home.

Safety in petroleum

December 6, 2009 - 6:43 am - Posted by admin

There is a refinery plant that is owned by BP (Beyond Petroleum) or formerly known as British Petroleum that is located in Whiting, Indiana. Now this particular refinery plant came under some concerns, after a story was published in the Chicago Tribune about this specific factory owned by BP. It appears this article has left a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouth and especially the citizens of Whiting, Indiana. BP does appreciate the article in the Chicago Tribune and is glad the author of the article took the time to write a story up on BP. Many companies today are using technology that helps to prevent any contamination and old tanks are being dug and being replaced with reinforced stainless steel drums to help provide better protection for the environment. However, there was a lot of misrepresentation in the article and the facts didn’t get published in the article, like the false information did. So BP would like to take this opportunity and clear up some things, so the good folks of Whiting can know that BP is committed to following all the rules and having a respect for the environment.

Stay in NYC on a budget

December 5, 2009 - 3:29 am - Posted by admin

NYC_voidclassHow much bigger can they get? I see some of those hotels in the major tourist cities being built bigger and bigger these days. I wonder if some of these will become their own city one day or maybe even have their own zip code. You can just look at some of those nice new york budget hotel and suites and see just how big they are getting these days. They are all competing for your dollars and they hate when a convention or big event comes to town and they fill up all their rooms. When a hotel has to turn away somebody; that is money that is lost for them. So in an effort to make as much money as possible, the hotels are being built so big, that some cities won’t have a population as big as one of these large hotels. I haven’t ever had the chance to stay in one of these really big ones; but I have stayed at some that could take-in over a thousand people.

Moving back East

September 15, 2009 - 9:40 pm - Posted by Sherri R

Our company like many others within our industry is looking to identify top talent and make sure that those people are in the right places for the organization to help grow the business. With that there are possible moves that would take a person like myself back East towards our HQ and the thought of packing up the family and moving is quite daunting. Our company does offer a generous relocation package where they hire long distance moving companies to come in make the move and transition as smooth as possible. Now it is a matter of weighing the benefits of taking on a new role in a new location or staying put for awhile and continue to grow in my current role.

What is on your shelf

September 30, 2008 - 7:31 am - Posted by Sherri R

We recently started to get bids on finishing our basement and the amounts that came back were quite surprising. While the amounts were vastly different the one common theme was that adding unique touches to the basement was common. One bid came back with the recommendation to put in bookshelves that would would blend into the wall that would give one room the option to be an office or a bedroom. We thought this was a great idea as it adds functional space and the overall increase and what you would get back if we ever sell would be doubled if we sold. Our thought was that based on the current environment that we can add additional living space at a great value for future investments.

Recduce your heating and cooling costs

May 9, 2008 - 11:43 am - Posted by Sherri R

We just recently received our latest heating and cooling bill and were amazed at just how much our bill was. We live in a brand new home and knew that all the insulation was great and there were no leaks. What we discovered is that our thermostat was in a room with no blinds in this room and this caused it to be in direct sunlight most of the day. So the thermostat was staying warmer and staying on longer even though the was staying cool. This was a lesson that we wanted to share and to look placing wood blinds in your windows and look at the placement of your thermostat and if your energy bills are sky high you may want to rethink where you have your controls.

Label your garden

May 6, 2008 - 9:55 pm - Posted by Sherri R

Spring has finally arrived in the Northwest and it is time to planting those flowers and bushes. We recently moved into a new home and the landscape in the flower beds was gong to be this years project, so did some research on the types of plants and bushes that would thrive in our area. My wife and I have no idea on what plants to add so we relied on a friend to help with the planning and design stage. One thing that we did agree upon was having a small garden in the back where we could grow some of our own fruits and vegetables. We are going to let our kids pick out their favorite vegetable and let them own a piece of the garden so that they can have some responsibility in what we grow. I remember having a small garden that I helped to plant and grow and can remember the thrill of picking my first watermelon and then serving it to the family. So we prepared the soil and got the seeds and the plant stakes to help start the process and then will hope for the best.

We were introduced to metalgardenmarkers.com where they have a great selection of metal garden marker that you can customize with the plants names or other messages of your choice. They really look to add a unique flair to your garden or planting area and are much better than those ugly wooden stakes. So whether your are looking for a plant label, or way to organize and label your flowers then you are sure to find what you are looking for. The site makes it easy to order and there are no special gadgets that you need to worry about. You will find the metal stakes in various sizes and shapes to help you create the custom look that will make your garden look like a professional did it. One of the best features is that these garden markers are made right here in the USA from materials purchased from US suppliers.

Commercial real estate on the rise

March 28, 2008 - 11:26 pm - Posted by Sherri R

While most of the bad news has been around the housing market it appears that commercial real estate is alive and well in our area. The expansion of businesses, hotels, and shopping centers continues to grow. In fact just about 20 minutes from where we live there is a new retail/living area going up. The concept is that build condos and apartments on the top 4 floors and the main floor are local shops and specialty stores. It is a great looking community and most of what anyone could need is right there within walking distance.

Protecting your investment against bugs

March 27, 2008 - 4:06 pm - Posted by Sherri R

pest control

We recently read a report that there are millions of homes each year that are endangered by various termites, insects, and pests. These little bugs can build up over time as they build their colonies and the path to your home becomes easier. Many people will try and treat on their with over the counter products that can be found at the local hardware store. This can be effective but if the insects are inside the wood or foundation you will need to consult with a professional like Pest Control Dallas experts at ARPT. They also provide Pest Control Fort Worth in Tarrant and Dallas county. When we lived in Texas we used to have battle carpenter ants. While ants typically do not sound that harmful, species like the carpenter ant can get into the woodwork and create major damage to your home and it’s structure.

carpenter antsThey get their name because they prefer to create their colonies inside wood, old trees and buries lumber. They do not actually eat the wood , but chew off small pieces that can create a huge hole or cavity in the structure. You can see signs of carpenter ants because their debris often look like sawdust. As they build their colony which can take months they create channels and other large areas that expand in length. This is what weakens the structure of the home or your trees and make them unsafe.  So if you are suspicious of carpenter ants you will want to consult Dallas Pest control experts like the ones at All-rid Pest and termite control to come out and assess the situation.

Moving into our new home and finding new furniture

March 19, 2008 - 6:38 pm - Posted by Sherri R

We have recently moved into our new home and one of our first goals was to find some new furnishings for our two youngest kids. It was time to upgrade the crib bedding to a more grown up bed for our youngest. We were looking for a bed that she could grow into and provided functionality so that if she had friends sleep over they would have some where to sleep.  We were able to find this white bunk bed that provided a big girls bed with a place where her friends could have a sleep over. We got her new kids bedding that featured Disneys newest hit Hannah Montana. We got her some of the matching accessories and hew new room is a place that she loves to spend time in and bring her friends over to play and just giggle. With our new home it gave us more space and larger rooms so that the kids could actually play and have a place to hang out with their friends aside from the family room. It is nice to know that they can entertain their friends and the kids love to come over. I can recommend that when you are looking for kids furniture and kids gifts you can find a great selection.
